In Greece, dinghy sailing holidays at our Beachplus Clubs in Lemnos, Lesvos, Halkidiki and Sivota offer an informal style of teaching. Tuition is progressive and flexible. Just returned from our first ever Neilson holiday to Sivota, Greece and it surpassed our expectations.

The only negative thing was the 45 minute wait in the coach on the tarmac at Preveza airport in the baking sun, after 35 mins the driver put on the air con but we'd already drank our water and were quite ratty by then, having been travelling since before 6am.

However, that was all forgotten upon our arrival at The Retreat, seeing breathtaking views and the rest of the holiday was excellent. A word of warning for those with small children, it is not buggy friendly due to the million steps and there isn't really anywhere for them to run about safely when not in kids club.

My boys, aged 8 and 11, had never been in a kids club but had an absolute blast, thanks to Alice, an angel in a Neilson T shirt!! They did every water activity we did, even the Kayak Safari and Ben managed to "turtle" the uncapsizeable fun boat!

We found all staff to be genuinely friendly, but not gushingly so, with the exception of Tommy, the "entertainer" who seemed rather quiet and unfriendly without a mic in his hand. Special mentions for these outstanding members of staff: Alice (Sharksters),Michael (Surfbusters "he's awesome!"), Simone & Bernie (bar), Emily & Ben (waterski - so patient & encouraging with me), Andy, Ed (beachies) and lastly Eliott, for being simply the nicest, most genuine fitness guy we've ever met - do the Swim and Stretch with him every day.

The accommodation was clean, tidy and had air con, hair dryers and comfy beds but unable to say much more than that as only spent probably an hour in the room all week, apart from sleeping!

We loved the 3 nights non inclusive nights as it gave us the chance to get the water taxi into Sivota - can recommend the Steak House and the Meditteraneo. However the food at the Retreat was excellent, with such a huge choice that it catered for everyone's taste. Kathy and Callum even cook pasta, omelettes, stir fries etc while you wait.

We did find the booking system quite odd and frenzied on the Monday morning but after that it was OK and once I managed to get on a sailing course just by turning up as 2 people hadn't shown up. A virgin water skier, I got 6 tows as the guys book your next tow as you get out of the water - the most exhilarating thing I have done in years. This was what I loved about Neilson that anyone could try anything and the staff would help them do it.

Finally take part in the Regatta, as it's good fun although hugely competitive - I just wanted to take part but my husband had other ideas. A fun boat won our Regatta with no wind!

Now Neilson converts, our only dilemma is do we return to Sivota or try somewhere else?

just had a week in halkadikki...with wife and 3 children ages 7,5 & 3...We went there last year and were very impressed..We have also been to Lemnos,Sivota and Ortakent,Hence returning..Still a great place to holiday with you family..First the good bits
1) great rooms,very spacious,good interconnecting rooms
2)well laid out resort
3)great food even better than last year
4)Good bike guide (Sean)..altough he,s off for 10 days in mid july!!
5)Good beach team and ski team..
6)lots of other activities(very good dive school)
7) easy to get into town...Skioni,which has some great reasonbly priced restaurants
8)outdoor cinema most nights
There are lots of well run things about his hotel but there are some gripes ..
1)AJ the "tennis coach" is i think very average and nowhere near the standard we have had before, woe betide you if you are a beginner...very poor and seems more interested in the "ladies" and drinking than tennis coaching, got better coaching from fellow guest in 10mins than from AJ in 2hrs!!
2)Bottled water in resort is 1 euro a bottle..however the same stuff in Skioni is 1.39 euros for 6!!!!...ice creams and drinks are very expensive in resort, its cheaper to cycle or even get a a taxi into skioni or the other little resort (come out of hotel and turn left then take little road after 1km)..and you will be supporting the locals who are all very friendly..The "kids" cocktails are 4.25 euros each ..for 1/2 pint fruit juice!!..beer is 3.50 eoros a pint.work that out.All things in resort cost 50-250% more than local shops
3)the kids club staff need some better direction, enthusiasm and ideas, they all seem very laid back compared to previous years at Neilson resorts.
4)The staff are rubbish at volleyball!!!

Its more good than bad so don't be put off,am sure they will address theese issues, apart from bar pricing which am sure comes from U.K.which is probably beyond there control..

We had a very good week but NOT a amazing week as in previous years ...thanks

Just returned from a week at Porto Heli. Had a fantastic time windsurfing and sailing, you can do as much or as little as you like. The instructors are excellent, would definately book with Neilson again. Never seen so many good looking staff in one place!
