Go Exploring

A fifteen minute stroll from Portomyrina Palace lies Mirina, the
capital of Lemnos. Built in the 12th or 13th Century BC, Mirina is
dominated by an impressive Venetian castle.
The headland and castle straddles the two bays of Mirina, belonging to
the town’s Greek and Turkish quarters. Today the only permanent
inhabitants of the fortress are wild deer, introduced to the village in
1970 from Rhodes. There are plenty of charming shops to browse - look
out for classical pottery and wood carvings, local woven fabrics and
embroidery - the traditional folk art of the island.
The island offers several classical sites, including the most ancient
Neolithic colonisation in the Aegean - the city of Poliochni,
excavations have revealed a close relationship with the ancient city of
Troy.
Exploration by mountain bike or hire car is highly recommended. Travel
inland and the interior is untouched by tourism. Here you will find
many lovely villages full of character and a warm welcome from the
local people.
Out and About
• Caique Boat Trips - Relax on a traditionally built Greek boat.
Discover the tranquillity of the Lemnos coastline and the beauty of the
island as seen by the local fishermen. You can take a Caique trip
whatever time of year you travel (weather dependent) on a choice of
excursions. A half day coastal cruise gives you the opportunity to
enjoy the island scenery during the day, whilst the sunset cruise is
the ideal way to unwind after a day of activities.
• Local Car Hire - Discover hidden pockets of culture and
unspoilt scenery in your own time. Hiring a car is a fantastic way to
discover the beauty of Lemnos island at your leisure. There is a
cluster of interesting archaeological sites on the island, and the
lakes to the north are well worth a visit if only to view the flocks of flamingos that live
here. For an insight into a Greece that is influenced by many but
spoilt by none, hiring a car is your way forward.
