Vassiliki lies in the south of Lefkas island in the Ionian Sea. The
picturesque harbour becomes a social focus by night, the harbour lights
attracting many of the island’s visitors. There are a number of
beautiful beaches and villages to explore many reached by boat
including Meganisi and Vathi, the capital of Ithaka. Vathi is a small,
colourful and busy town, set in a steep sided bay. There is a great
deal to explore on this island including the site of Odysseus’s Palace.
It is also possible to catch a glimpse of one of the homes of the
Onassis family. The island of Skorpios lies in a bay to the north of
Nidri – it is possible to swim in one of a few public bays, but the
general public is forbidden from setting foot on the island.
More well known is the large island of Cephalonia, made famous by the book Captain Corelli’s Mandolin and the subsequent film.
Out and About
• Cephalonia & Ithaca - Frequent ferries from Vassiliki port
access the nearby islands of Cephalonia and Ithaca. Infamous for their
role in the legend of Odysseus and more recently in the book and movie
‘Captain Correlli’s Mandolin’ the amount of history related to these
islands is immense. Fiskardo on Cephalonia is well worth a visit, being
the only village not devastated by the 1953 earthquake and so retaining
its attractive Venetian architecture.
• Lefkas Town - The capital of the island is just a local bus
ride away and well worth a visit for the day or evening. An attractive
and bustling town, Lefkas includes narrow lanes with fancy boutiques,
open squares with busy tavernas and a quayside teeming with yachts and
fishing boats.
• Boat Trips - Part of the beauty of Vassiliki’s setting stems from the white cliffs, which extend all the way to Cape Lefkatas. The easiest way to admire the cliffs or to visit the beautiful, remote west coast beaches is on a boat trip. Local boatmen ferry tourists by day to Agiofili, a peaceful beach to the south of the resort and around Cape Lefkatas, to Porto Katsiki. They also offer evening trips to watch the stunning sunset off the Cape Lefkatas or to Sivota for a meal in a local taverna.
