Lake Wolfgangsee is in the heart of the Salzkammergut, Austria's Lake District. There are 76 lakes in total,  surrounded by stunning mountains and unspoilt villages. The picturesque village of St Wolfgang sits on the shore of the lake, and from here it’s easy to explore the area. There is a great variety of walking and cycling tracks, and the
Schafberg railway can give you a head start to the top of the Schafburg from where the whole Salzkammergut region is visible.

Another favourite way to explore the area is on horseback which can be organised locally from a number of stables who offer trekking for small groups. St Wolfgang itself is characterised by tastefully painted houses and cobbled streets. It is also well known for its inhabitants’ love of
music. Every night during the summer there are light classical, folk and operatic concerts and brass bands playing in the village square twice a week.

Highlights

Walking & Hiking
Wander around the lake, explore the local villages or hike to places only accessible on foot. This is a fantastic area for all walkers of all levels. We recommend a 15km hike along the high walk to the Falkenstein wall, then the idyllic Fürberg walk along the lake to St Gilgen.

Mountain Biking & Cycling
The cycling around St Wolfgang is a mixture of easy cycle paths and quiet roads which are great for family outings. There are plenty of more demanding cross country mountain trails too. For gorgeous views of the lake and the surrounding mountain backdrop, a must-do is the cycle path along the shores of the lake.

Climbing
There are some excellent climbing opportunities around the lake including prepared rock faces, indoor walls and fixed rope walks. Whatever your experience, you’re bound to find a course that’s just right. There’s also a local climbing school that runs personalised courses and guided tours.
