Austrian Tirol has more up its sleeve...

  • I was really looking forward to going to Austria in May. I’ve been to Innsbruck and Kitzbuhel on several snowboarding holidays, but never during the summer months, so I knew it would be a great experience.

We landed in Innsbruck and were welcomed by dramatic mountain views, sunshine and blue skies – glad the weather was on our side!We went up the Nordkette mountain and admired the stunning landscape and an impressive view of the city. Later on, we visited the charming old town, with its cafes and restaurants scattered amid pretty cobbled streets. Tempted by one of them, we had a very tasty and filling dinner and experienced the famed Austrian hospitality

We then drove to Kitzbuhel and spent our first night in the 5* Schloss Lebenberg Hotel. The next day, we did some gentle mountain biking, which was awesome and the fab weather persevered. The paths were mainly for beginners, and they were mostly flat. In the afternoon, we were taken around town by the local tourist guide/historian and had learnt so much about the town and in general, Austrian history. We had never seen so many churches in one town. We also didn’t know Austria ruled nearly half of the world at some point in the past! Emperor Maximillian did a real good job!

The day after, we were all quite nervous, albeit excited to do the activities that were lined up for us. Some of us have fear of heights, rapid waters, etc…. however, our guides were brilliant at making us feel comfortable. We enjoyed abseiling down the waterfalls, canyoning, climbing, and scrambling through rocks, so much so, that by the end of it, we wanted to do it all over again. Such fun!

The morning after, we went up to Kitzbuheler Horn with our guide. The view from the top was out of this world, with mountains still covered in snow, as far as the eye can see. We then descended halfway down to the beautiful gardens, with lots of flowers just about blooming from every corner!

The typical Austrian ski restaurant we had lunched at, was also perfect and the owner and staff were very hospitable, offering us some of the best Tyrolean food and the local Schnapps.

Kitzbuhel is a very charming town that has so much on offer! We really didn’t realize how many activities there are, to suit anyone. We were at different levels of fitness and various ages, yet we all had an amazing time and each one of us found something unique to enjoy…

I’d recommend it to anyone and would happy to go back there myself anytime…        Loumer.
