Ylläsjarvi sits serenely at the southern base of the region’s highest ‘fell’, home to Finland’s longest ski run, and ideal for ski holidays in Finland. Arctic blue polar skies provide a stunning backdrop to pristine snow-covered forests and undulating slopes that seem to illuminate before the eyes.

The crisp, dry climate ensures snow reliability right through one of the longest ski seasons. Whether you’re looking for a ski holiday that encompasses an action-packed week of skiing and adventures, or something a little more relaxing, Ylläs can offer both. Its uncrowded, floodlit slopes are ideal for beginners and intermediates, while the sheer choice of activities means you can try things you’ve only ever dreamed of.

Substantial investment has been ploughed into the ski base and ski area over the past few years including a new gondola. Ylläs also boasts the world’s first sauna gondola, as well a VIP gondola for private hire, 11 new slopes and a new ski centre. More improvements are planned but what won’t change is the warm, friendly welcome you receive from everyone and the unforgettable memories you leave with.

Visit our activities and apres ski page for details of the endless list of winter activities available.

Please note: during the months of December and January the resort will plan to open approximately 16km of pistes as these slopes are floodlit and daylight hours are limited.

Fantastic and very special holiday - stayed in Saaga Hotel in Feb 2009 for one week. The room left nothing to desire for and the half-board food from the buffet was absolutely excellent. We always had a large variety of hot and cold dishes to choose from, in the morning and the evening. You can get chips, sausages, burgers and bacon but I do recommend extending the palate and trying the other, more Finnish dishes. The hotel had a small, but sufficient swimmingpool, with a separate area for the kids, there are also whirlpools and saunas, which is excellent when the legs ache from skiing or you just need to warm up thoroughly (remember the clothes have to come off in the sauna in Europe, it's nothing to be shy about). My friend booked Beginners Pack Skiing and truly enjoyed the week. The group had 4 skiiing instructors and everybody learnt to get down red slopes confidently. The skiing area is very suitable for beginners and intermediate, but also expert skiiers had their fun. The ski lifts and ski school are virtually in front of the hotel. We went on the snowmobile trip to the husky farm where we went on the husky sleigh trip, also got some excellent hot berry juice there and Finnish sausages (put the Finnish mustard on it - it is good!). The temperature went down to -32 C in the second half of the week, but the arctic thermal suits provided kept us warm. When it gets that cold and you do not feel warm enough, you can buy inner gloves at the ski shop to wear under your thick gloves. Ski goggles also keep half the face warm and the rest can be covered in a number of scarves, no problem. I can recommend snow shoeing in the forest, it is great value for money and it is beautiful and peaceful in the woods surrounding the skiing area. You can walk off by yourself, they give you a map. We would go back anytime. Thank you, Neilson

Stayed in Saaga Hotel for one week in Jan. Room was lovely, but half board food was possibly the worse we have ever come across. Lots of guests complained to the various tour operator reps and around the tables in the restaurant (canteen????). Staff are not very friendly at all and the karaoke (there's no getting away from karaoke!) night was in Finnish only with no encouragement to the Brits to join in. In fact the DJ didnt speak English at all!!! Quite inappropriate. A number of other guests had been before, but not to the Saaga, and all said they would not return to the Saaga as they had stayed in better places before. The resort is lovely but v.v.small and felt a bit isolated. If taking kids or a little unwell before going check out doctors etc. as one of us was ill for most of the holiday and no-one very helpful, esp hotel staff. We booked 3 trips with Neilson and made 2 but had to cancel 1 due to illness. No refund allowed so would suggest you book on a trip by trip basis just in case. We ended up losing 190 Euros on the husky trip cos rep said no refund allowed even though others who went on the trip said there was really no reason why a refund couldnt be given as it wasnt as if a husky sleigh had been allocated and was sat vacant. Very disappointed by the attitude of Neilson rep as illness was genuine and losing so much money just added to the misery. Overall, disappointed with Neilson who we have used before. Not sure if we will use them again.

We stayed at the Saaga Resort apartments, three adults in a 1 bed apartment. The apartment was great good facilities, fridge, dishwasher, hob, microwave, hairdryer, and shower gel. You can get free internet access, if you take a laptop with you recpetion will provide you with a cable free of charge otherwise there is a computer in recpetion for use free of charge. The pool is great and fairly quiet, the apartments have their own sauna which is nice. Breakfast is full english served 7-10am and dinner is a buffet served 5-8pm. The apartments have a DVD player and CD player as well as cable TV. The local shop is adequate for buying soup, soft drinks and snacks although Finalnd is expensive. There are three places to get drinks/food by the slopes all very nice (recommend the hot berry juice). The ski school was fab the instructors are very helpful and speak excellent English, the slopes are quiet and ideal for new skiers. The Husky dog trip is well worth it I would recommend the 10KM trip on Monday afternoon. The Neilson taster session is great fun, snow shoeing is fab as are the snow mobiles. We did the Northern Lights trip it was minus 40 and no northern lights I did not enjoy it but thats not to say others did not. You can get a sledge from the hotel reception for 5 euros for the week. The ski room has a lockable cage for each apartment you pay a 50 Euro deposit for the key which is put on the room and returned when the key is. The ski hire place has lockers you can hire for 7 euros a day or 35 euros for the week which although not cheap does save you carrying your ski equipment from the hotel (ski in/out only possible if you are an experienced skier). The artic suits and boots provided by Neilson are ideal for all activities other than skiing. Snow shoeing costs 10 euros for the days hire from the safari lodge by the slopes. I would highly praise the hotel and the holiday, have booked to go back next year.
