Beitostolen

Friendly, safe and fun for beginners and families would best describe Beitostølen. It offers gentle, uncrowded slopes, a virtually queue-free lift system and excellent snow record from November through to May. More challenging slopes and some off-piste tree skiing can be found at the nearby 'Alpine Centre' ski area served by a daily ski bus service.

Just returned (January 2010) from beitostolen. We stayed in the Beitostolen Apartments. The apartment was very well equiped, modern, warm and comfortable. Situated about a 10 minute walk from ski school. We are non skiers who normally go to Finland (Levi) which has it all. Beitostolen was much quieter, which suited us this time although there were activities such as; horse sleigh ride, which was lovely, snow mobile, dinner in a tippee and huskies. We got the bus to Fargerness which is slightly bigger and had amazing views we hadnt seen on arrival as it had been dark. The resort area was extremely beautiful but the week we were there a bit of a ghost town! until the weekend when it came alive with norwegians. The rep, Tina, was brilliant and knowledgable and very friendly. We would definately go back again. I believe, from talking to skiiers and snow boarders that it was a benefit to have the slopes so quiet and that the place sereves beginners and intermediates best. I would say if you dont ski you will prefer Levi where there is more free fun to be had a now a much more developed resort, for instance they have made a proper place by the slopes where you can just take your plastic sledge and have fun for free. they also let you hire skis or snowboard and haveave ago at kids land without having to buy a skipass if you want to see if you like it and have not skiied before. Beitostolen is a great ski resort with great scenary. Levi is a fun resort for all with skiing too. Expensive to eat out in both resorts and in fact to do anything. For instance: Pepes Pizza in Beto: we had a large Pizza between us, one glass of wine, a beer and 2 deserts and the worked out at £65! Overall a great (but expensive) holiday even though neilsons offer was great for flights and accomodation we still spent over £650 in resort in a week with trips, food etc.

This is the perfect place for families, beginners and intermediates. Getting there is a doddle with an excellent and short flight on new planes with Hamburg International from Gatwick to Farganes. Farganes is a lovely little airport and the transfer is only 45 minutes. The snow is perfect powder to dry and crunchy and there is loads of it. The resort is compact and ultra convenient - who wants a ski bus stop when you can walk or ski shuffle for 50 yards! The ski hire shop is friendly and efficient and next door to the ski school which is next door to the ski lift office which is next door to the main ski lifts. There's a ski shop right by but, with the exception of thermal underwear, prices for ski clothes are higher than the UK. The ski school is great - excellent instructers with perfect English and small groups. Our children turned into confident skiers in just a few days. Private lessons at 50 kroner for 50 minutes (about £57?) were well worth it as an optional top up. Norway seems expensive ( and it really is for alcohol so take your tipple with you) but you get real value for money. Excursions are an example of this - we thought the snowrafting was expensive when we booked it but didn't realise that it lasted for an hour and a half - brilliant fun and well worth it. We stayed at the Radisson SAS Hotel and liked it a lot. Nice touches like good coffee machine available free most of the day. Excellent food, lovely lounge area, very nice swimming pool and saunas, comfortable rooms, friendly staff. Note though that the standard sofa bed arrangement for children is very cramped being just a couple of feet away from the main bed. We upgraded to a mini suite and that worked fine. Not many Brits at Beitostolen but not a language problem as so many people will instantly switch to English when they realise you are not Norwegian. Tina the Neilson rep is friendly and helpful and helps everything go smoothly. Lovely place and will go back.

The perfect place to learn, the ski school, and Jonas in particular were great, and had two complete beginners skiing in knee deep powder by day 5.
Jacek the rep did a brilliant job making sure the holiday ran smoothly, from sorting out the ski fitting to booking us on a husky sled trip!
While on the expensive side when in resort, eating and drinking out, its not too expensive in the supermarket, and when you do venture out Peppes Pizza is possibly the best in Europe! The large really is large, and more then enough for two people, including lunch the next day!
So if your looking to go somewhere to learn you can do alot worse than Beitostolen! Thanks Neilson for a great first ski holiday, I doubt it will be our last.
