Hey Guys and Girls,

Im after some advice, after many years of ski-ing/boarding in Europe I am looking to venture across the pond!

So if you can recommend any resorts in Canada or USA or tell me ones to avoid I would be most gratefull.

I am looking at going over xmas or New year

I would highly recommend a resort in Canada called Fernie (http://www.skifernie.com/) unfortunately im not sure if Neilson still do this resort? I’ve worked there for 2 years and absolutely love the place. The mountain is perfect and made up of 3 big bowls that are always full of fresh powder. The first year i was there we had over 13M of snow in the season! Not a big fan of Banff and Whistler, they seem a bit to "over-tourist-ey" to me. Also ive fond in Canada that alot of the resorts you need to get at least a 10-15 minute bus ride to the actual mountain, it doesn’t bother me as the snow makes up for it!

The Après in Canada unfortunately not to good and not overly better in America, if your wanting a great night life then stick to Europe. I cant say mush on America as ive only been to CopperMountain there, but again the snow is great, the mountain is beautiful, and if you stay in the mountain resort then the Après is good as well. Personally, if there is good snow over that side in the winter, then you cant really go wrong at most resorts.

breck  is  high  but i  personlly   really   like  it

aspen  /  snowmass  is  isolated   but  that  can  be  a  good  thing  [   no   weekend   crowds  good   ski ing     though

If you're looking at Breckenridge then bear in  mind that Copper Mountain, Keystone and 'A basin' (Arapahoe) are all very close by - They used to be owned by one ski company and I believe were/are linked by a free shuttle bus service via Frisco. With the exception of 'A Basin' they all offer a vast range of off and on piste skiing/boarding and it generally feels less cold than Canada, due to the altitude/lack of humidity - It isn't cheap though but there are plenty of bars and places to eat out in Breck.

A big hit for me were the very civilised 'lift lines' which meant you didn't have to 'do battle' with pushy impatient skiers/boarders fighting past you ina typical European scrum!! Equally the ski patrols are professionally trained paramedics as well as policing the slopes and managing the avalanche risk very well.

Some might say the only other downside is the indigenous population... :-)

My first snowboarding holidays were in the US and Canada and it wasn't until last season that I experienced a European resort. Going to Verbier was a great experience but given the choice, I'll pick USA everytime. All my friends who only see Europe every season thought it was great, don't get me wrong, the nightlife is much livelier than in the US, but the europeans have no idea of respect when it comes to queueing for the lifts.

Its totally different in the US, the runs are wider, the locals are very friendly and chatty, the queues are small and organised and everything is so much cheaper once you get there. If you know where to go you can buy one dollar beers from some bars.

I've got myself an Epic season pass for colorado next season which includes Vail, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Heavenly, Keystone and Arapahoe Basin ... All for cheaper than it costs for a 2 week lift pass over Christmas/New Year in Vail. I've already booked 2 weeks in Vail, a week in Breckenridge and I'll be booking at least another 3/4 weeks.

My personal preference is Breckenridge because it has a bit of everything - Long easy learner runs for beginners, tree runs and some of the best snow parks I've yet to see, also the nightlife is probably one of the better ones for Colorado resorts.

If anyone wants to go to any of the above resorts and don't have anybody to go with, let me know.

No Name, if you end up not sorting anything out for yourself for USA/Canada over New Year and still want to go skiing anyway, myself and another person from this forum are going to Mayrhofen over New Year, just to let you know.

Anyone else who is wanting to go skiing over New Year is welcome to join us too.
