Mayrhofen at a glance
At the foot of the Zillertall Alps, in the lush green Ziller Valley, lies one of the prettiest towns in the Austrian Alps. The beauty of its surroundings, a huge choice of activities and a lively atmosphere combine to make Mayrhofen one of the most popular summer destinations in the region. You’ll be tempted by a superb choice of cafe´s and restaurants and charmed by traditional craft shops and local live music.
Getting around couldn’t be easier - as well as the Ahorn cable car and the Penken gondola, the Ziller Valley steam train runs daily between Mayrhofen and Jenbach, and the town is well served by local buses which go to pretty villages higher up the valley. There are cycle paths galore and the Penken gondola will give you and your bike a welcome lift to 1,350m. If you feel like exploring, the Spannagel Caves make an excellent day trip or visit the stunning Krimml waterfall near Salzburg.

✓Walking & Hiking: The Ziller Valley has an excellent system of chairlifts and cable cars (including Austria’s largest, the Ahorn) leading to 200km of marked footpaths. Walk at your own pace or join a hut trek or high-altitude alpine tour. You can also head down, instead of up, for a gentle stroll along the river. The Zillertal Activcard gives a return ride on one of 11 cable cars each day, free use of public transport in the region, free admission to swimming pools and discounts on many services. ✓Hintertux Glacier Skiing: The glacier, around 30mins from Mayrhofen, is well equipped for enthusiastic summer skiers and boarders with 23km of pistes, a terrain park with four table tops and six kickers. There are also a number of rails, a spine and a 100m half-pipe.
