Salzburg is one of Europe’s most appealing cities, blessed with a stunning location by the banks of the wide Salzach river and surrounded by glorious mountain scenery. The medieval Hohensalzburg fortress, perched atop the craggy Mo¨nchsberg clifftop, overlooks the narrow cobbled streets of the UNESCO- protected old town, where Mozart, Salzburg’s most famous son, was born. ✓Hohensalzburg Fortress: A funicular railway scales the side of brooding Mönchsberg Mountain to reach this medieval fortress, where you can take in panoramic views across the whole city and to the mountains beyond.
✓Salzburg Cathedral: Originally built in the 8th century, this church burned down twice and was rebuilt in a grand Baroque style with a mighty dome in the late 16th century. Mozart was baptised here and later acted as cathedral concert master.
✓Mirabell Gardens: Considered to be one of the most beautiful Baroque gardens in Europe. Make sure you visit the Pegasus Fountain, a famous scene from the Sound of Music.
