Lake Annecy Resort Info, France

Lake Annecy is a long turquoise lake surrounded by dramatic mountain scenery in France's Alpine Haute-Savoie region.

Lake Annecy at a glance

Canal-lined Annecy and historic Talloires are amongst a number of bustling little resort towns circling the lake, linked by a free shuttle bus. The medieval old town of Annecy is often referred to as the ‘French Venice’ thanks to its bustling streets interspersed with small canals and pretty decorated quaysides. Organised boat trips are popular from here and an ideal way to enjoy the lake and the beautiful alpine scenery.

The lake itself is surprisingly warm, reaching around 24 degrees in summer, and is known as Europe’s cleanest lake. There’s a vast array of watersports available, from sailing and canoeing to diving or waterskiing or the opportunity to witness the memorable displays at the Talloires annual ‘King of the Lake’ wakesurf competition. The wider area is a paradise for outdoor activity lovers. A 40km road circles the lake and is extremely popular with cyclists (it formed a stage of the 2009 Tour de France) and there are several traffic-free cycling routes plus mountain biking and hiking in the wooded hills around the lake.

Throughout the summer lively events like the August Lake Festival and spectacular firework show means that there is plenty to do in the evenings as well.

Great for...

Walking & hiking: Lake Annecy offers excellent walking. From demanding high mountain hikes to easier walks on the wooded Semnoz mountains, where you will be rewarded with panoramic lake views with minimal climbing. Guided history tours in Annecy are also popular. Maps available locally.
Via Ferrata: From mid May to the end of October, guided via ferrata tours are available on La Tournette, Lake Annecy’s highest peak at over 2000m. This is a physically demanding fixed climbing route. You tackle steep ascents but the views are certainly worth it from the top.
Canyoning: Explore the most beautiful canyons in the area of Annecy. With varied terrain and a guide to lead you, this exhilarating activity, suitable for all levels, is definitely worth a try.
Events & Festivals
August 2012 - Fête du Lac
and other small fêtes take place in August around the many villages along the lake. The splendour of the lake comes to life with festivals and farmers’ markets and the wonderful backdrop is celebrated for one day with fireworks, music and lights.
