Lake Maggiore at a glance
Lake Maggiore is an excellent base from which to explore Italy’s lake region, and a wonderful destination in its own right. Being Italy’s second largest lake, there are several resorts to choose from, the most popular being on the western shore.
Stresa, in particular is full of lively markets, bars and cafés, and plays host to several musical festivals throughout the summer. From Stresa, you can take a cable car up to the Mottarone, a natural balcony between Lake Maggiore and Lake Orta, where there’s access to several gentle walks.
The area is characterised by pine woods and lush gardens typical of its Mediterranean climate and perfect for hikers and mountain bikers. The lake, 65km long and 21km wide, also plays host to many activities including swimming, sailing and windsurfing.
