Alesund at a glance

Recently voted the most beautiful town in Norway, Ålesund stretches across several islands perched on the Atlantic Ocean. It is known for its impressive architecture since the town was completely devastated in 1904 and re-built in characteristic Art Nouveau style. For visitors, the best place to appreciate the town and its surroundings is from Aksla, where Fjellstua vantage point offers breathtaking panoramic views. Surrounded by stunning islands, pristine fjords and majestic mountains, Ålesund is a fantastic base for exploring the region of Sunnmøre. Many day trips and tours can be organised locally. Visit the UNESCO World Heritage listed Geirangerfjord or explore the dramatic Hjørundfjord surrounded by the Sunnmøre Alps. Go bird watching at Runde Island sanctuary, one of the largest in Norway or take the impressive Troll’s Path and gain an insight into Norwegian folklore. An evening cruise to the Island of Ona introduces you to rural life in one of Norway’s remote fishing communities. The town itself offers numerous bars, cafés and restaurants as well as many attractions like the Atlantic Sea Park (Aquarium), museums and galleries.
