The beautiful Greek island of Lefkada may be known as the ‘Caribbean of Greece’ but it’s the rugged inland mountains that make it such a hit with cyclists. From steep forested peaks to rolling hills dotted with rural villages, the choice of trails here offers something for all abilities. Choose a gentle road ride along the coast, cooling off on secluded beaches along the way, or challenge yourself with some of the more technical riding to be found in Lefkada’s dramatic interior.
‘The White Church’ is one such challenge - a full-day mountain biking epic to one of the island’s highest points: the hilltop Chapel of Saint Ilias. The route snakes up to a lofty 1158m, taking in fragrant orange groves, sheer cliffs and remote villages along the way. It’s definitely not a climb for the fainthearted, but the panoramic views out across the Ionian Sea and the unforgettable descent down ‘Spider Alley’ make it more than worth all that effort.
Our Cosmos Beachclub in Vassiliki, to the south of the island, makes a fantastic base for exploring the best Lefkada cycle routes. You’ll find a wide choice of rides on your doorstep with everything from scenic coastal roads to sweeping singletrack.
