What tennis level are you?

This guide will help you work out your tennis level so that you can make the most of our tennis programme. It won’t rank where you stand against official LTA players, but it’s a great starting point when you're signing up to group or private coaching sessions on a beachclub tennis holiday.

Beginner level

What you can already do

If you sign up for a beginner’s coaching session, your coach would expect you to be exactly that: a beginner! You may not have played the game before, and you are unlikely to be familiar with technical shots or game tactics. What our coaches like to see is a passion for sport and a willingness to learn. It also helps to have a basic level of fitness so that you can move around the court.

What you want to master

To take you from a beginner to an intermediate tennis player, there are a number of skills you’ll want to get to grips with. You’ll need to gain an understanding of the basic techniques, movements and rules of the game, including: forehand, backhand, volley and serving. Once you’ve got these under your belt, you can experience returning shots, some basic match tactics and get involved in a tournament with players of your level.

We’d recommend

Our ‘green group’ coaching sessions are the perfect way to get you hitting balls for the first time. You’ll cover the basics and at the end of the week we host a tournament so you can practice your newly learned skills. We keep sessions fun so that you are motivated to keep practicing and recommend that you practice during ‘free play’ time when the courts are available. Looking for the best beachclubs for beginners? Head to Aeolian Village or Vounaki.

Intermediate level

What you can already do

You’ll already have an understanding of the basic techniques, movements and rules of the game. Ideally, you can hold a rally of around six, serve and start a point. You may still be new to the game, or perhaps you haven’t played for a while and you’re a bit rusty. It’s likely you’ve had some coaching before, either in a group or individually, but it may have been some time ago. Either way, you’re keen to refresh your memory and refine your skills.

What you want to master

For you to become a more confident and consistent player, you’ll need to refine your technique. A good place to start is by working on your serve, so you can hit the ball more consistently and with greater accuracy. You’ve probably achieved topspin on a forehand before but you’ll need to master topspin on a backhand. At this level, you’ll need to play more tactically and develop match play strategy.

We’d recommend

Our ‘blue group’ coaching sessions are great for intermediate players. Our coaches will work with you in a group setting to refine your technique and help you become a more tactical player. We recommend you take part in social tennis so you can play against as many different people as possible. Try our beachclubs with more courts to practice on such as Baia dei MoriPortomyrina Palace or the Retreat.

Advanced level

What you can already do

If you’re an advanced player then it’s likely that you play tennis regularly and probably at club or county level. In a match, you’ll have mastered playing a range of shots including topspin forehand and backhand. You’ll have confidence at the net when volleying and your serve will be accurate and consistent too. Ideally, you can hold a rally to 12 consistently using topspin competently off both wings. In a match you’ll play strategically.

What you want to master

At this level, deeper analysis of your technique will help you to play like a pro. You’ll benefit from breaking down your shots so you can see where you need to improve; a lot of players benefit from topspin and slice development. You’ll also want to master patterns of play and match play strategies so you can build and finish points. It’s time to play to win!

We’d recommend

Our ‘red group’ coaching sessions help club level players to master the intricacies of the game and address some of the common problems with technique. For county level players, our ‘black group’ coaching sessions will push your tactical play to another level. Our expert coaches can also offer private coaching sessions for an additional fee. Try our beachclubs with the best courts, such as AlanaBuca or Messini. Alana, Buca and Messini also offer a premium tennis package.
