The Alpenschlössl has an almost fairytale feel to it. The name literally means 'mountain castle' and it's quite clear in its castle-esque buildings.

The hotel is in a set in a secluded spot in the middle of a meadow, high above Söll meaning the views of the Kaisergebirge Mountains from virtually every window are spectacular.

The ski area and lifts are around 4km away, but the hotel has its own ski bus to shuttle you to and from the slopes at the start and end of each day.

Look forward to some traditional Austrian cuisine, international dishes and a wide selection of fine wines. The bar area is cosy and a good place to kick back at the end of the day.

Wellness facilities include an indoor swimming pool, sauna and a steam bath and all within a bright and modern wellness area. There are also massage treatments available if you need a little TLC at the end of the day.

Nearest lift: 4km

Ski bus stop: Outside the hotel. The hotel runs a shuttle bus to and from the slopes four times a day, twice in the morning and twice in the afternoon

About the resort

Söll sits in a woody valley, one of many in the impressive 284km Ski Welt area in Austria. It's an impossibly pretty area with rolling mountains, snow clad trees and chocolate-box buildings. Head to the top of the distinctive dome-shaped peak of the Hohe Salve mountain for some uninterrupted views across the craggy Wilder Kaiser ridges.

Intermediates, in particular, will love Söll as there are some many cruising slopes with challenging sections. That's not to say that beginners are left out; the foot of the slopes in Söll is made for novices thanks to a huge expanse of wide open, gently sloping runs.

The village is very traditional with an onion-domed church and more chocolate-box buildings. Over 284km of pistes, 90 hi-speed lifts and 77 rustic Alpine huts and après bars (that's about one every 3km) are waiting for you in this picture postcard area.

The après here is really buzzing après and gets going from about 3pm. It's a great atmosphere with hi-enegry, fun Europop and plenty of dancing in ski boots!

Rest and relaxation

An unexpected and welcome facility is the modern wellness area. The stone and wooden walls are lit with tranquil colours have a wonderful grounding effect, much needed after a day of adrenalin on the mountains.

Take a gentle swim in the indoor swimming pool or rejuvenate yourself in one of the two saunas, steam room or emotion showers before kicking back in the relaxation room.

If you fancy a treat (and why not??) book in for a sports and beauty massage for some extra pampering.

Food and drink

The large and traditional dining area is a lovely place to enjoy the cuisine created by the experienced chef. Expect local dishes with local produce and a great variety of choices throughout your stay.

Start your days with a continental breakfast and move on to a four-course meal every evening. The menu includes soup, salad buffet, a choice of main and dessert. Your Christmas and New Year Gala meals are also included.

Rooms

With a mix of rooms in the traditional main hotel and the more contemporary Landhaus Ager annexe, each comes with some pretty special views out across the Wilder Kaiser region.

No matter where you choose to stay, every room has a traditional feel but with some modern touches. All come with flat screen TV, minisafe, free Wi-Fi and an ensuite bathroom with hairdryer, shower over bath and wc.
