The 6 most scenic ski runs in Europe

This classic 26km ski circuit takes you through some of the most dramatic views in the Dolomites – and that’s really saying something. Linked runs encircle the cliffs of the magnificent Sella massif and can be skied in a clockwise or anticlockwise direction (top tip – we prefer clockwise, there’s less poling involved).

While not for novices, the Sella Ronda circuit can be conquered by confident intermediates with a bit of stamina. The loop will take all day, so leave plenty of time for your adventure. And prepare to be dazzled by those majestic limestone crags - come sunset, they take on a ruby glow that will make your heart soar.

Val di Fassa makes a great base for tackling the Sella Ronda. Simply take the Belvedere lift from neighbouring Canazei to join the loop.

Take on the challenge of France's longest black run and you’ll be rewarded with epic panoramas of the Parc National des Ecrins. The 16km descent kicks off from the lofty heights of Pic Blanc at 3300m, with stunning views out across the park’s glaciers and mountaintops.

Take your photos before you set off, as the first part of the run is pretty steep. It eases off again lower down, bottoming out along the mighty Sarenne Gorge. How’s that for a dramatic finish? The entire run takes over an hour (unless you’re a pro racer) so take snacks and plenty of courage!

A few après-ski drinks in fun-loving Alpe d’Huez make the ideal end to such a scenic day on the slopes.

Sitting high above the resort of Mayrhofen, the vast Hintertux Glacier is a year-round snowy playground with the kind of mind-blowing vistas you’ll only ever find at such dizzying altitudes. Think 360° views of snow-capped mountains and the picturesque chalet rooftops of the Zillertal valley. There are runs to suit all levels of experience, as well as a fun kids’ area and a freestyle snow park.

And while not strictly a ski run, the giant icicles and intense green lake of the glacier’s ice caves are a unique sight you shouldn’t miss. You can even arrange to swim, kayak or paddleboard through the chilly glacial waters for an experience you won’t forget in a hurry.

Mayrhofen’s ice bar makes a fitting follow-up to a day on the glacier. There are also plenty of cosy bars and restaurants if you’ve had your fill of ice for one day!

This challenging black run (full name, La Face de Bellevarde)has to be one of the most notorious in France. It’s also one of the most beautiful, that’s if you dare to look up from your ski tips!

The steep 3km run rose to fame during the 1992 Albertville Olympics, setting the scene for one of the most exciting downhill events in history. Head up the Olympique cable car first thing for morning sun, freshly groomed snow and stunning views down to the alpine valleys below. Oh, and a hit of pure adrenaline.

Treat yourself to a steam bath and massage at the Val d'Isère Centre Aquasportif to celebrate your success on one of the most epic runs around.

This pretty, tree-lined run has been affectionately dubbed ‘the Narnia Run’ by locals and you can see why - there’s an unmistakeable magic in the air as you cruise down through peaceful powder-laden forests.

It’s located in the Grau Roig ski area and can be reached via the Montmalus lift. It’s probably on the easier side of many red runs, helped by the fact you’re unlikely to have too many crowds to contend with, making it a great choice for intermediates building their confidence. Just make sure you turn left at the top of the lift - head right and you’ll be faced with a steep black run instead!

The Grau Roig ski area can easily be reached from Soldeu and El Tarter with your Grandvalira ski pass.

Sshh, this one’s a local secret. Head above the clouds to one of the most secluded runs in the Dolomites. It’s just you, the snow, the sky - and some seriously massive mountains. Towering above the piste is the imposing rockface of Lagazuoi mountain, frozen waterfalls suspended mid-cascade. Drink in the views as you descend the wide, quiet slopes of this genuinely spectacular red run.

You have to travel a little to find this hidden gem, but at just an hour’s bus ride from Arabba or Alta Badia, it’s well worth the trip.
