From expert tips and travel stories to guest favourites – here's where the energy lives on, long after the beach towels been packed away.
Warm up exercises to get you tennis court ready
It's important to hydrate when you play tennis, and when you play in our beachclubs, you’ll need to be on top of this. Equally important as your fuelling routine is a good tennis warm-up drill. Play un-stretched and you could find yourself limping for the rest of your holiday. Plus, if you’re at all competitive about your tennis game then you know you need to be ready to perform from the first serve. Static stretching – stretching and holding the stretch at its extreme – is a bad way to warm up that can cause injuries (though it is a good warm down). And tennis is a full-body game, so get your whole body moving. If you can’t do a full warm-up before a game, at least try to do a quick jog and get your arms, shoulders, hips and knees moving.
What tennis level are you?
This guide will help you work out your tennis level so that you can make the most of our tennis programme. It won’t rank where you stand against official LTA players, but it’s a great starting point when you're signing up to group or private coaching sessions on a Beach Club tennis holiday.
Tennis serve :top tips and techniques
Were you a big Sam Groth fan? Sadly, Australia’s one-time world number 53 has retired now, but before he did he served a ball at a reported 163.4mph at the Buscan Open in South Korea. That’s Sam’s claim for tennis immortality. And it’s a good one. Serving is such a vital part of tennis at the top level, and it’s probably the part that most part-time players struggle to master. A Neilson tennis holiday puts you in the perfect places and with the perfect people to get not just a functional serve, but one that will become a potent weapon in your arsenal. A bit like Sam Groth (you know who he is now). But before you start packing your tennis gear, here are some top tips from us and a handy video from former GB player Mark Petchey, to help improve your serve.
Help and support
Frequently Asked Questions
First up, trainers. A tennis holiday will involve lots of twists, turns, and short sprints, so having durable footwear is key. Make sure they offer support and pair them with slightly padded socks.
Shorts are a must too and should allow for plenty of movement without getting in the way. We recommend choosing moisture-wicking materials. A sweatband can also be helpful.
Being in the sun all day can take its toll, so pack suncream, sunglasses, and a hat for protection. It's also recommended that you pack a water bottle to stay hydrated. We provide rackets and balls, but feel free if you'd prefer to bring your own gear. Read our advice on how to choose the right tennis racket or check out our more extensive packing list for your tennis holiday.
Looking for a Beach Club to improve your game during your tennis holiday? You can't fault Messini and Buca Beach Clubs in Greece when it comes to tennis facilities with 7 shared courts. Alternatively, head to Levante Beach Club in Rhodes with 6 courts including a show court or our full racket sports centre at the new Neilson x Mangia's Torre del Barone Resort in SIcily and two courts at Neilson x The Ravenala Attitude in Mauritius.
For something more relaxed, Sardinia's Baia dei Mori Beach Club is the place to unwind between matches and coaching sessions during your tennis holiday. Those looking to master their killer backhand can book our Premium tennis package at Alana Beach Club in Croatia, which has 6 tennis courts.
