We’re Neilson - proud partners of Restless Development and big fans of getting stuck in, and we’re thrilled to be supporting the young triathletes again this year - and sharing a little Good Energy along the way.
A Which? Recommended Provider, we know a thing or two about fun, freedom and trying something new. Our Beach Club and ski holidays pack in 25+ activities and up to 60 hours of kids’ clubs each week - giving families a chance to relax, recharge and do their thing.
Continuing from our cycling tips, we’re moving on to the next part of the journey - a guide to race-day running.
One foot in front of the other - running seems simple, right?
It is. But racing is a different story. Longer distances can feel challenging, especially for young runners, which is why pacing and motivation matter. Here are our top tips to help young triathletes stay engaged, manage their pace and enjoy the run on race day.
GET READY. GET SET. GO.
The story of the tortoise and the hare still holds true when it comes to race-day running. Pacing isn’t about speed, but control - finding a rhythm that can be maintained from start to finish rather than setting off too fast. Staying focused helps avoid early burnout, and simple tricks like chatting to a friend, listening to music or counting steps can all help young runners keep a steady, comfortable pace.

Running Can Be Fun
Running doesn’t have to feel repetitive or tiring. Simple running games are a great way to build enthusiasm while improving strength, mobility, and endurance.
Exercises like pogo jumps, opposite hand-to-foot taps and straight-leg running help develop coordination and movement, while gentle reminders about form - relaxed shoulders and a head-up posture - can make running feel easier and more efficient on race day.

The Ready, Set, Run! Checklist
To round things off, we’ve put together a simple checklist to help ensure your kids are ready to run on race day.
Here are six simple ways to support your child’s running journey:
- Get the gear right: Comfortable trainers, weather-ready kit and socks that stay put make all the difference.
- Keep it simple: Short, achievable runs with walking breaks help build confidence and consistency.
- Fuel for fun: A little water and a light snack before and after keeps energy levels up.
- Don’t skip recovery: A gentle walk and a few stretches help tired legs bounce back.
- Focus on mindset: Celebrate effort, not speed - progress looks different for every child.
- Make it fun: Mini goals, charts or small rewards keep motivation high.
What's Coming Next
With the running fundamentals covered, there’s plenty more to come. Over the coming weeks, we’ll be sharing further practical tips and guidance to support young triathletes as they continue their training and build towards race day.
