Montgenèvre

Picture a classic mountain village in winter with snow-capped wooden chalets, quaint little streets, tree-lined pistes and eternally snowy mountain peaks and you're picturing Montgenèvre in France.

As one of the oldest and most picturesque ski resorts in France, Montgenèvre has plenty of heritage. But better than that, it consistently sits in the top six French resorts for snow depth and snow quality.

At a glance...
  • 400km Milky Way ski area
  • Picturesque & traditional
  • Ideal for beginners & intermediates
  • Quiet nightlife
  • Sunday flying from Birmingham, Gatwick or Manchester
  • 1 hour 45 minute transfer

The resort lies on the French/Italian border so has the charm of both countries. You can also expect fantastic food, wine and a laid-back way of life you associate with France and Italy.

Much of the village is now pedestrianised and perfect for a slow stroll, but there’s not much in the way of shopping and après-ski is centred around a few bars. There have been some recent developments such as a state-of-the-art Aqua Centre which have improved the choice of off-the-piste activities.

On the mountain

Montgenèvre's snow record is one of the best in Europe. Snow clouds head up the valley, dumping snow over the slopes and resort, then hit a mountain and head back down the valley, dumping even more snow over the slopes and resort. Perfect!

Access to the 400km intermediate's paradise that is the Milky Way ski area is easy. Start out in France and go for lunch in Italy as the border is only a few miles away. The runs near the resort centre are well suited to beginners and improvers whilst the more advanced skier can enjoy the wider area and fantastic off-piste opportunities.

Try a ride on the village luge track. It's over 1.5 km down the mountain on a railed track and you get the ride cheaper with your lift pass. Or head to the resort's natural ice outdoor rink for some skating. You'll find it right in the heart of the village with easy access from the slopes.

When you fancy a break from the slopes there’s nice selection of activities to enjoy in Montgenèvre. Relax in your chalet or apartment with a good book or head out in to the village and soak up the relaxed atmosphere. Alternatively, visit the outlets or shop until you drop by taking a short bus ride to nearby Briançon.
